Since When Is Pooping In The House OK?

February 28, 2008

I have a little pug who seems to have forgotten his potty training.  I put him out this morning like always, he went pee, then wanted in again.  I’m thinking that maybe he doesn’t need to poop…

NOPE.  He just couldn’t wait for his breakfast.

I fed him and went upstairs like I do everyday.  Usually he needs to go out again sometime after breakfast once it works its way through the ‘pipes’ but today he needed to poop IMMEDIATELY after breakfast!  I hear a little scratch at the door but by the time I got downstairs it was too late.

So pooping on the front door tile is good enough I s’pose in an emergency situation.   You know, those times when you just need breakfast so bad because your evil people don’t feed you nearly enough, that going poop just comes second place.  Then you realize, DAMN I gotta poop NOW!  And poop inside the house.  Oh well, I gave the people 2.7 seconds to get down here and open the door.  They’re just not fast enough, lazy peoples.

Sorry Giggs, my bad.  But next time no poop, no breakfast.  Poop (outside) is now the fee for getting fed in the morning.

Spring is Coming!

February 18, 2008

I think Spring may finally be on it’s way to us! We had a bit of a cold snap a couple weeks ago but the last few days have been sunny and beautiful! The snow is melting everywhere and I don’t think we should see any more :)

This makes me very happy and it makes Giggs very happy because he gets to go out more. Spring weather is perfect for puggies and the sunshine makes me want to go for nice long walks. We’ll be avoiding the dog park for a little while because while we were there yesterday, we noticed that it’s turning into the ‘mud park’. We’ll be waiting for things to dry up and for the maintenence people to spread fresh mulch. The dog park is in a marshy area of town so every spring it turns into a giant mud pit and a section of the place sort of floods. The Labrador Retrievers have a great time there in the spring. Luckily, Giggs doesn’t like to get wet, so we don’t end up with a stinky soggy mess of a pug to take home.

Speaking of the dog park… yesterday, Giggs was wrestling with an American Bulldog puppy (4 mos), the puppy was towering over Giggs but gumming him lightly so we weren’t too concerned. A little while later I noticed that the puppy had a good mouthfull of Giggs’ back fat/skin, right in the middle of his back, and the puppy was NOT letting go. Giggs was wiggling this way and that, trying to escape but the puppy still wouldn’t let go. The puppy then started to wave his head side to side, like a shaking motion, but slowly. Time for mama to intervene, to I bent over and grabbed the puppy (gently) and tried to get him to let go of Giggs. The puppy’s owner then came over and tried to do the same. He grabbed his collar and pulled him away from Giggs, except the puppy still wouldn’t let go so Giggs got dragged along too. The guy finally managed to pry the puppy’s jaws off Giggs and Giggs got free and proceeded to snarl and go at the puppy! I’ve NEVER seen Giggs EVER snap at any other dog, so the puppy must have been hurting him. Throughout the whole incident Giggs didn’t yelp or whine once but he was definitely struggling to get free. Luckily, those sharp puppy teeth didn’t break the skin and Giggs’ back seems to be ok, and he doesn’t show any signs of pain when I touch it. We decided that it was time to go home after this and if we see that puppy again, we’ll be a lot more careful.

Visit to the VET

February 13, 2008

Giggs had his annual check-up and shots on Monday. The vet told us he’s a little chunky, but I don’t think so. We don’t get out as much in the winter so true, he’s not getting as much exercise as he should. I love his roly poly shoulders though! And he does still have a little bit of a waist. He’s just a super solid guy; he’s got big thick legs so I think he’s just big boned… Whatever, our breeder said he’d be 21 lbs and that’s exactly what he is! Well, 21.6 lbs so maybe we’ll try and trim up that .6 of a lb.

I took him on a super long walk yesterday and we’ve been giving him breakfast and dinner in THIS TOY we just
bought and that makes sure he eats slower. Now instead of scarfing his food in 30 seconds, it takes him a good 10-15 minutes to eat his kibble while he bats this ball around and chases it. The ball will drop a few kibbles at at time (about a mouthful) so it works great for that. I find it’s too generous for treats though, so that’s why it’s now the food dispenser.

We also finally bought doggy toothpaste and a toothbrush. We’ve always had the finger brushes, but now we’ve got the real thing! Giggs loves the poultry flavored toothpaste and chewing on his toothbrush. I think tooth brushing will be Tony’s job because Giggs sits still better for Tony. The vet also gave us some dental formula kibble (they’re huge!) and I’ll use them for treats. It’s got enzymes in it to help clean his mouth. I think we’re set on the dental front.

After the vet, I gave Giggs one of his smoked bones out of the freezer and he’s been going on that ever since. I’m surprised his mouth isn’t raw from constant licking and trying to get all the marrow out. Yuck!

Even when exhausted he still won’t stop licking!
